Dear Mavericks,

It all started in 1937 when a young Sister Helen, joining a convent in Wisconsin, wrote her required autobiography. Fresh out of school, she poured her thoughts onto those pages—expressing gratitude for her family, optimism about her future, and a quiet joy in the path ahead. She was simply being herself, but her words became more than a personal record. They were a test of an idea: Thoughts create outcomes.

Decades later, researchers dug into those diaries from 180 nuns who graduated alongside Helen; they analyzed the emotional tone without knowing who lived or died. The results? Beyond belief! The most positive writers—those with hopeful, grateful mindsets—lived 10-15 years longer on average. Their odds of reaching 85 were double that of the pessimists. Sister Helen’s habit of positive thinking wasn’t just a mindset; it literally extended her lifespan, turning inner optimism into outward resilience. Norman Vincent Peale would later popularize this in his 1952 book The Power of Positive Thinking, but the nuns proved it first: Train your mind for positivity, and outcomes follow.

We’ve all felt the opposite pull. As we crash through this Fourth Turning, it’s easy to wake up to a doom-scroll of headlines—creeping controls, market tremors, systems straining at the seams. That negativity fog settles in; in fact, you probably are not consciously aware that sharing the doom is not only draining your energy but that of those around you! Worse that energy drains from what really matters: protecting and building wealth.

But what if I told you positivity isn’t some fluffy wish, it’s a skill, trainable like muscles in the gym? Science backs it: Your brain’s neuroplasticity means deliberate practice rewires pathways, turning habitual complaining into solution-seeking drive.

Ever catch yourself spiraling on “What if everything falls apart?” That’s your brain’s default negativity bias talking, honed by evolution to spot threats. But constant dwelling floods you with cortisol—the stress hormone that literally weakens neural connections, impairs decision-making, and shortens fuses for action. One recent thread nailed it: “Every time you focus on what’s wrong, cortisol interferes with memory, learning, and problem-solving.” Flip it, though? Shout “SOLUTIONS” in your mind. Force a brainstorm: One actionable step? Pursue it with the belief you’ll crack it. This simple hack, rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy, cuts rumination by 30% and sparks dopamine loops that make positivity addictive.

Moreover, just like the threat of negativity is contagious as you pass it onto others, so too is positivity! You can literally pass it forward and send positive energy into the group, just through the simple act of solving problems!

Look at the data: A 2024 neuroplasticity review shows positive reframing—focusing on controllables—strengthens prefrontal-amygdala links, boosting reward sensitivity by 20%. Optimism isn’t innate; it’s built through habits like gratitude journaling or visualizing best-selves, as neuroscientist Andrew Huberman and psychologist Laurie Santos explain in their podcast (see below). Santos’ Yale happiness course found students practising problem-reframing (e.g., “What can I build here?”) reported 25% mood uplifts, with upward spirals: Positivity expands creativity (broaden-and-build theory), leading to 32% higher life satisfaction over time. Even in financial stress, a 2023 study showed optimism-trained groups persisted 18% longer on diversification tasks.

Philosophers like Alan Watts add depth: In his lectures (beautifully animated on AfterSkool), positivity emerges from flow—life’s a playful “game” where resistance to problems breeds negativity, but embracing them as puzzles unlocks creation.
